چکیده

The ubiquitous Catalan numbers Cn = (2n n ) / (n + 1) occur as t (n,−n) in the following table showing the number of ways to reach the point (n,m) on a rectangular grid under certain traffic restrictions, indicated by arrows. m 1↑→ 3↑→ 6↑→ 9↑→ 12↑→ 12↑→ 12↓→ ↘ 2 1↑→ 2↑→ 3↑→ 3↑→ 3↓→ ↘ 12↓→↘ 1 1↑→ 1↑→ 1↓→ ↘ 3↓→↘ 3↓→↘ 12↓→↘ start here 1↑→gate ↘ 1↓→↘ 1↓→↘ 3↓→↘ 6↓→↘ 15↓→↘ −1 ≈ 1 →↘ 1↓→↘ 2↓→↘ 4↓→↘ 9↓→↘ 21↓→↘ −2 ≈ ≈ 2 →↘ 3↓→↘ 6↓→↘ 13↓→↘ 30↓→↘ −3 ≈ ≈ ≈ 5 →↘ 9↓→↘ 19↓→↘ 43↓→↘ −4 ≈ t (n,m) ≈ 14 →↘ 28↓→↘ 62↓→↘ −5 ≈ ≈ ≈ ≈ ≈ 42 →↘ 90↓→↘ 0 1 2 3 4 5 n We prove this with the help of hypergeometric identities, and also by solving an equivalent lattice path problem. On the way we pick up several identities and discuss other known sequences of numbers occurring in the Catalan traffic scheme, like the Motzkin numbers in row m = −1, and the “Tri-Catalan numbers” 1, 1, 3, 12, 55, . . . at the gates.

Impact of Optimally Minimizing Delay Times on Safety at Signalized Intersections in Urban Areas, Case Study: The City of Virginia Beach

Optimally minimizing delay times at signalized intersections can significantly improve both traffic flow and safety. However, most traffic flow optimizing tools do not measure the effect on safety. This study uses nonlinear programming (NLP) algorithms to optimally minimize delay times and employs both Safety performance functions (SPFs) and empirical Bayes (EB) before-after methodology to meas...

Seasonal evolution of beach waste and litter during the bathing season on the Catalan coast.

Beach waste and litter composition and evolution on popular urban (located in the main nucleus of the municipality) and urbanized (located in residential areas outside the main nucleus) beaches of the Costa Brava (Catalan coast) were assessed during the bathing season. Waste and litter production (amount and composition) were affected by urbanization and varied during the summer. Urban beaches ...

Analyzing Beach Recreationists’ Preferences for the Reduction of Jellyfish Blooms: Economic Results from a Stated-Choice Experiment in Catalonia, Spain

Jellyfish outbreaks and their consequences appear to be on the increase around the world, and are becoming particularly relevant in the Mediterranean. No previous studies have quantified tourism losses caused by jellyfish outbreaks. We used a stated-choice questionnaire and a Random Utility Model to estimate the amount of time respondents would be willing to add to their journey, in terms of re...

Impacts of off-road vehicles (ORVs) on macrobenthic assemblages on sandy beaches.

Sandy beaches are the prime sites for human recreation and underpin many coastal economies and developments. In many coastal areas worldwide, beach recreation relies on the use of off-road vehicles (ORVs) driven on the shore. Yet, the use of ORVs is not universally embraced due to social conflicts with other beach user groups and putative environmental consequences of vehicle traffic on sandy s...
